Step-by-Step Instructions for Your Winter Beanie!
Learn to make your first project!
For those who want to understand the "logic" of the pattern:
- You will be crocheting top to bottom and bottom to top (40 stitches each way) to make a trapezoid shaped piece to then be sewn together to make the beanie
- The shape is created by doing 32 half double crochets (aka HDC) on the back loop, 4 single crochets (aka SC) and 4 slip stitches (aka SL). Slip stitches are the shortest stitches, followed by single crochets and the tallest stitches in this project are half double crochets. The different heights of the stitches will create the trapezoid shape
- Depending on the size of your head and how tightly/ loosely you crochet, you will need between 35-42 rows for the beanie. Measure it around your head as you go to make sure!
- If you want vertical stripes, you change yarn at the top of the beanie (where the 4 slip stitches are), which makes it easier to hide the yarn change. So change colour every two, four or six rows
- If you want different colour for the brim, you change colour on each row - I typically leave 12 stitches (the side of half double crochets) to allow enough length to fold up the brim
- Once the seams are sewn, there will be a large hole and a small hole on both sides. Sew together the small hole to form the top of the beanie
- Be creative and have fun!
A few tips before you start:
- Pull the yarn from the middle of the skein to prevent skeins rolling around when you work on your beanie
- Try and practice the basic stitches before you start the project
- The pattern is pretty forgiving, so don't sweat if you miss a stitch here and there! You can always "make up" for it in the next row by doing two stitches in the same hole
